Common Threads Quilt Show

I attended our local quilt show this weekend. There were many beautiful quilts on display, and it was clear that there are a lot of talented quilters in our corner of the world. As with the previous show, however, I was disappointed by the small number of contemporary quilts on display. I don't know if this was deliberate or just a lack of submissions, but the result was an obvious absence of people under 30 attending the show.

Deck the Walls

It's a good thing I have some tall empty walls in my stairwell. I don't know where I'd store all my work if I didn't have them! Add a fistful of inexpensive aluminum thumb tacks, and there you go. Instant display wall. Not only is it a cheap storage solution, but it's also mostly cat proof.

My Biggest Painting Yet

This is my biggest painting to date. It's 36 by 36 inches square. It doesn't sound that big, but when the box of canvas showed up on my porch, it looked huge! Trying to cover it with paint only made it seem even bigger. The finished painting will be listed on Ebay and Etsy very soon.

Out with the Old, In with the New

After 22 years, my poor art lamp is on it's last leg. After all it's been through, it doesn't really owe me anything. It's been scratched, dented, repeatedly smacked with my drafting arm, and splattered with paint. It's even been spun into the wall a few times by my cats. It's the standard fluorescent incandescent combo light available in most art supply and drafting catalogs. I shopped around for a replacement that was the same style, but I thought, hey, if I'm gonna spend that much on a lamp, why not look for something with more style. There aren't a lot of choices, but this classic L-1 Lamp from Luxo is quickly rising to the top of the pile. I'm looking at the white one - just like Pixar. That's WAY more fun than my old one, and if it lasts as long, I'll be extremely pleased.

An Uncommon Redpoll

It turns out our new tenants are quite unique. The Common Redpoll is not so common around here. They occasionally come this far south in the winter, but typically build their nests much farther north. Mostly in Canada and Alaska. This is a photo of a typical female, and as you can see, they are quite small. The male has much brighter coloring and was the key to identifying these little fellers. We're waiting anxiously to see the babies.

We have a new tenant at our town home. One of the tiniest birds I've ever seen. I tried my best to sway her to a more appropriate location, but no such luck. Her nest went up in record time, right on top of the mailbox. The first picture is the nest by itself, and the second is one with the little momma squatting in her new abode. Now we're waiting impatiently to see if a little family emerges.

I've been searching all my local furniture stores for a click-clack sofa. It's the most affordable modern looking sofa, and (bonus) someone can sleep on it in a pinch. I found this Jetson Sofa Sleeper by Coaster Furniture at our local futon store (Suite Things) on sale for $319.00. It IS suite!

I've been searching for a new look for my workspace. It's far too "beige" and definitely due for an update. And it's time for my 20 year old computer hutch to go to furniture heaven (or the Goodwill). My electronics are so much smaller now, I want to simplify and get a cleaner look. This grouping from Room and Board is really inspiring me. The Jake chair is probably the only item from Room & Board that I could afford, but I'll bet I can create a similar look that fits my budget. Benjamin Moore, here I come!

I've been looking at dining room furniture for ages. Wood just wasn't doing it for me. Anything modern enough to suit me was WAY too expensive. I got the new Chiasso catalog in the mail today, and there it was. A sweet little set called Astor. I've always liked the (seemingly identical) Orbit chair from CB2, but there was no table. I wish Ikea would pull their head out and learn how to ship freight. They're losing a fortune in business just from me alone. This lovely little Vika desk set is shown in their catalog, and is very reasonably priced, but is only available at Ikea stores. They won't even ship the lamp. BOO! Their furniture items aren't any bigger than items shipped by Target or Amazon. Even with shipping costs, their furniture would still be a great bargain.

Ollie is the quality control expert when it comes to all the fabric items in our house. I bought a yellow flannel sheet from L.L. Bean to use as a blanket on the bed, and he had to inspect it right away. Only time will tell if it's up to his rigid "soft and fluffy" standards. The color's good for him anyway.

Am I the only one who's still addicted to Sheaffer No Nonsense Pens? I've been using them since the mid-70's and I just can't stop. Maybe it's the bright colors, or maybe the simple classic design. I must have at least a dozen of them, mostly vintage bought on ebay. Translucent, opaque, tag-a-long. And I've worn out countless others. I've tried other "fat" pens, but they just aren't the same.
